Biei’s Blue Pond (Aoiike) became globally famous when Apple used it as a desktop wallpaper. I went in April 2026, and this is the practical guide: access, parking, seasons and what to pair it with.

The pond itself is artificial — a by-product of erosion-control works on Mt. Tokachi — into which aluminium-rich water flows. An accidental collaboration between engineering and nature.
Getting to the Blue Pond
1. Rental car (by far the best option)
Public transport out here is thin, so a car is overwhelmingly the easiest way.

The Furano–Biei area also holds Shirahige Falls, the panorama viewpoints and a cheese workshop, all scattered across farmland — one car, one day, and you can see the lot.

2. Local bus (if you’re not driving)
Dohoku Bus runs from Biei Station towards the Blue Pond and Shirogane Onsen. It works — but services are infrequent, so check the timetable before committing your day to it.
3. Guided tour (no driving required)
If you’d rather not drive on unfamiliar roads, a Furano–Biei day tour covers the Blue Pond, Shirahige Falls and the viewpoints in one loop. Tours depart from Sapporo and Asahikawa in season.

Early April, right after the melt, meant high water and a sharp, saturated blue. It’s the kind of place worth returning to in a different season.
Pair it with Shirahige Falls
Five minutes by car from the Blue Pond, and unmissable.

- The Biei River below runs blue as well
- Everyone shoots it from the Blue River Bridge (Blake Bridge)
Mind your phone on the bridge. I nearly dropped an iPhone over the railing.
Things to know before you go
- 🚗 Road closures happen. This is mountain country; weather and season can force detours
- 📷 Early morning and weekdays are quietest. It’s a famous spot and midday gets crowded
- 🧥 It’s cold up here. April still needs a jacket, and summer evenings cool fast
- 💰 Parking is ¥500, paid on site — carry cash, as many rural car parks and small facilities in Japan don’t take cards
Conclusion: drive it, and don’t stop at the pond
- A rental car is by far the best access (buses are sparse)
- Even April is vividly blue — every season looks different
- Add Shirahige Falls, five minutes away
- Give the Furano–Biei area a full day by car and you’ll see it properly
