“How much does a long trip to Hokkaido actually cost?”
When you’re planning a trip, the cost is usually the first thing you want to know.
In April 2026 I spent 20 days circling seven Hokkaido cities — Sapporo, Otaru, Asahikawa, Furano, Biei, Wakkanai, Noboribetsu and Hakodate — doing all of it: Genghis Khan lamb, secret hot springs, the northernmost point of Japan.
I’m based in Japan, so these are real, itemized numbers, not estimates. Here is the full ~¥612,000 we actually spent for two people, to the yen. (Approximate USD is shown alongside — update for the current exchange rate.)

About ¥306,000 per person for 20 days. For a long trip, that may feel more reasonable than expected. The standout is transport: rail pass + rental car + limited expresses alone came to about ¥210,000.

All amounts below are totals for two (roughly halve for one).
Flights (Narita ⇔ New Chitose)

Saving tip: we flew Jetstar (a low-cost carrier) for ¥39,540 for two. With early-bird fares or mega-sales you can find one-way fares in the ¥5,000s. LCCs charge separately for baggage and seat selection, so compare total prices. Overseas visitors: if you’re already flying into Japan, a domestic hop to New Chitose is usually cheap and frequent.
7-day rail pass (¥56,000 for two)
We used JR Hokkaido’s domestic “Hokkaido Free Pass.” Against regular reserved-seat fares for the routes we actually rode, it saved about ¥20,000 for two. The big driver was the Wakkanai round trip — Asahikawa ⇄ Wakkanai plus Wakkanai → Sapporo alone was over ¥20,000 per person.
For overseas visitors: consider the tourist-only JR Hokkaido Rail Pass (3/4/5/7-day). It’s sold to foreign passport holders and is often better value than buying tickets individually — worth it if you’re going as far as Wakkanai, Hakodate or Asahikawa; less so for just Sapporo–Otaru–Noboribetsu.
Limited expresses outside the pass (¥58,620)
The pass covers 7 days; after that it’s full fare. Three Hokuto limited expresses between Hakodate and Sapporo came to about ¥60,000. We went to Hakodate twice — doing it once would have been more economical (a lesson learned).
Airport transfers & short hops (~¥17,640)
New Chitose ⇔ Sapporo (¥7,340), plus city buses and local trains in Sapporo and Hakodate.
Rental car (¥38,280)
We used Car Times five times.

Note for overseas visitors: to drive in Japan you need an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention) or, for some countries, an official translation of your license. Car-sharing apps often require a Japanese account, so a traditional rental-car booking is usually easier for tourists.

19 nights, averaging ¥7,600/night (for two).
Best value by city
#1 Y’s Hotel Asahikawa — from ¥4,274; public bath, by the station, clean. Best value.
#2 Odyssis Sapporo — ¥5,084; clean, big desk, big tub. Well balanced.
#3 Tokyu Stay Sapporo — ¥19,515; in-room washer & microwave. Ideal for longer stays.
Ways to save on lodging
- Choose places with multi-night discounts (e.g. Tokyu Stay)
- Stick to stations-front hotels (lowers transport cost)
- Hostels are cheap if you’re fine with shared bathrooms (plat hostel was in the ¥4,000s)
- On long stays, pick rooms with a washer to save on laundromats

Lesson: seasonal attractions disappoint off-season. Goryokaku is best during the late-April cherry bloom.

- Otaru Kiriko cut glass (¥20,000–30,000): too pricey
- Music boxes: hard to carry home
Long-trip tip: buy souvenirs on the last day at New Chitose Airport — no extra luggage to lug, and you can arrange shipping.

Solo comes out about 18% more per person, because the rental car can’t be split, single rooms are only 60–70% of a twin, and you can’t share dishes.

Cost FAQ
Q1. Are cards widely accepted?
Most hotels, attractions and large stores take cards, but small independent shops can be cash-only. Carry around ¥10,000 in cash to be safe.
Q2. How to keep food under ¥3,000/day?
Lean on Seicomart — its Hot Chef hot meals, lamb rice balls and katsudon are cheap and good.
Q3. Should I buy a rail pass?
Only if you’re circling Wakkanai / Hakodate / Asahikawa. For just Sapporo–Otaru–Noboribetsu it doesn’t pay off. Overseas visitors should price the tourist JR Hokkaido Rail Pass.
Q4. Can I travel cashless?
About 90% of the time, yes — but foot-bath fees, shrine offerings, and small eateries need cash.
Conclusion: ~¥600,000 for two is a realistic target
- Guide: ¥600,000 for two, ¥300,000 solo (comfortable, not extravagant)
- Budget: ¥200,000s solo (hostels + self-catering)
- Luxury: ¥800,000+ for two (ryokan + endless sushi)
Even on a 20-day trip, your budget swings hugely with your plan. I hope this makes the numbers feel more real.
